What Is the Reaction Camera?

The reaction camera is an optional JoltCall feature for recording a reaction only after everyone being recorded has agreed. Camera and microphone access stay off during a normal simulated call. During an active call, the device owner must tap Record reaction, review the disclosure, grant the operating-system permissions, and tap Start recording.

Recording is always visible through a persistent REC timer and Stop control. The clip stays temporary until the device owner chooses to keep it in JoltCall's app-private storage, share a temporary copy, or delete it.

How to Use the Optional Reaction Camera

Step 1: Open JoltCall and Choose a Character

Launch the app and browse the character library. Tap any character to open their profile. Whether you pick the Police Officer, the Ghost, or a custom contact, the reaction camera works with every character.

Step 2: Ask Before Recording

Tell everyone in view that you want to record and get their permission first. A normal simulated call does not request camera or microphone access.

Step 3: Start Recording in the Active Call

During the active call, tap Record reaction and read the disclosure. If everyone agrees, tap Start recording. Only then does JoltCall request camera and microphone permission and show a front-camera preview.

Step 4: Watch the Recording Indicator

While recording, JoltCall keeps a visible REC timer and Stop control on screen. Tap Stop at any time. Ending the simulated call also stops an active recording.

Step 5: Review and Choose

After recording stops, the clip remains temporary. You can keep it in JoltCall's app-private storage, share a temporary copy through the system share sheet, or delete it. Dismissing or skipping the review deletes the temporary clip; JoltCall does not save it to the photo gallery automatically.

Tips for Better Reaction Videos

Lighting Matters More Than You Think

The front camera needs decent lighting to capture facial expressions clearly. Natural daylight produces the best results. If you are pranking indoors, make sure the room lights are on and your friend is facing a light source, not sitting with a window behind them.

Phone Angle Is Critical

When you hand the phone to your friend, position it so the front camera captures their full face. Ideally, the phone should be at chest height or slightly below chin level. If they hold the phone too low, you will only get a shot of their nostrils — not ideal.

Choose High-Reaction Characters

Choose an obviously fictional, low-stakes character that the participant is comfortable with. Do not use authority, medical, emergency, grief, or phobia themes to provoke fear for a recording.

Use Scheduled Calls for Hands-Free Setup

If the participant has already agreed to the recording, a scheduled simulated call can reduce handling during the scene. Keep the phone visible, leave the REC indicator unobstructed, and do not use scheduling to hide that recording is active.

Record in Landscape for TikTok

While the reaction camera records in portrait by default (matching how people hold phones during calls), you can achieve landscape recording by propping the phone sideways on a surface. Landscape videos work well for YouTube, while portrait is perfect for TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Sharing Your Reaction Videos

Share Through the System Share Sheet

JoltCall can hand a temporary copy to the device's share sheet. The receiving app and destination are the user's choice; JoltCall does not promise a direct TikTok integration or automatic watermark.

Create Compilation Videos

If everyone recorded has agreed, you can combine multiple reaction clips into a compilation. Before publishing, review each platform's privacy and community rules and remove any clip whose participant withdraws consent.

Share to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts

Short-form vertical video is king in 2026. Post your best 15-30 second reaction clips to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Tag JoltCall for a chance to be featured on our official social media pages.

Privacy and Consent

Get permission before recording, then ask separately before retaining or sharing. A private group does not remove the participant's privacy rights. If anyone says no or later withdraws permission, delete their clip.

Ready to test the controls? Check JoltCall's current store availability and use optional recording only in an agreed, low-stakes scene.
